Terminology:

• The terms “surgeon” and “specialist” may be used only to refer to ACVS board certified veterinary surgeons. Residents may not be referred to using these terms.
• For residency trained veterinarians, replace “board eligible,” “board qualified,” and “credentials accepted by ACVS” with “[surgery] residency trained” or “individuals who have completed [surgery] residency training.”
• A resident currently in a surgical residency training program can be a “Resident in veterinary surgery” or “veterinary surgery resident.” No connection to the ACVS may be implied by active or post-surgical training program residents. Correct: a veterinary surgery resident; incorrect: an ACVS veterinary surgery resident.
• Individuals who have completed residency training, but are not board certified by ACVS, may indicate only that their practice is “limited to the practice of surgery."
• A residency is registered by ACVS; it is not approved, certified or endorsed, only registered.
