The major responsibilities for this position are to teach and provide service in soft tissue surgery in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, teach didactic and laboratory courses in soft tissue surgery to veterinary students, actively participate in training of surgical residents, and to develop a research program, which can be independent and/or collaborative with other faculty members. The surgeon filling this position will be responsible for approximately 36 weeks of clinical service. Approximately half of that time the surgeon filling this position will be responsible for daytime emergency and morning transfers on the urgent surgery Service, which also includes supporting the interventional radiology service, and serving as the backup for the standard soft tissue service. This service will be supported by a surgery house officer (resident or intern) and students or technicians. The other half of the time the surgeon will be responsible for participating in the standard appointment-based soft tissue surgery service. Responsibilities during the remaining 16 weeks include opportunities to teach lecture and laboratory courses in soft tissue surgery to veterinary students and the development of scholarly activity consistent with individual interest. Proportionate assignments for each area will be based on the interests of the candidate in conjunction with the missions of the Surgery program and the Department.
The service enjoys access to vanguard technology in diagnostic imaging, including a 64-slice CT scanner, 3.0 Tesla MRI, digital radiography, ultrasound, nuclear scintigraphy, and a dedicated interventional radiology suite. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a 300,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility opened in March 2015. Each specialty has its own dedicated rounds room. Faculty members’ offices and over 5,400 square feet of shared research space are located on the floor above the hospital.
The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery comprises approximately 50 faculty members, 51 clinical residents, ten rotating interns, seven specialty interns, and three administrative staff members. Shared laboratory space and technical support are provided within the Department, and six dedicated research technicians assist in the research missions of the Department’s faculty. Other specialties within the Department include anesthesia, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, medical and radiation oncology, neurology, nutrition, ophthalmology, soft tissue surgery, and zoological medicine, as well as a community practice program (UGA Pet Health Center). The Department participates in the college-wide M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Members of the Department also actively participate in highly successful collaborative efforts with faculty members from other departments within the college and other colleges on campus, including the College of Engineering and the Athens campus of the Medical College of Georgia. The Department has a strong track record for teaching, research, and clinical service.
