- Surgical Department Director
Description
SURGICAL DIRECTOR & PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Western Veterinary Center is seeking an exceptional surgeon to lead and grow our surgical department. This is not a position to fill a need, it's an invitation to own one. You'll have full departmental authority, a clear path to partnership equity in the practice, and the autonomy to build the surgical program you envision.
Founded and led by clinicians who understand what it means to practice medicine with integrity, WVC is privately owned and surgeon-led. We're now seeking the right leader to take the next chapter, someone ready to step into surgical direction, expand the scope and impact of our program, and become a partner in the practice.
THE OPPORTUNITY
You will be the Director of Surgery at WVC. That means:
- Full departmental authority, clinical protocols, case selection, surgical scheduling, team composition, equipment acquisition, and strategic direction are yours to lead
- Operational control, manage department budgets, hire and develop your surgical team, and shape the culture and standards of your department
- Collaborative leadership, work alongside experienced specialists in ECC, internal medicine, and cardiology; cross-specialty consults and case collaboration are part of daily life
- Team flexibility, if you have key team members from your current practice, we're open to them joining you at WVC
- Ownership path, equity stake in WVC with partnership track. Structure is flexible and negotiable based on your ambitions and the right fit
LOCATION & LIFESTYLE
Agoura Hills offers the kind of community many leaders seek when relocating: excellent schools, safe neighborhoods, and immediate access to world-class outdoor activities. Spend weekends hiking the Santa Monica Mountains, surfing the Malibu coast, or wine tasting in nearby Calabasas. The region is family-friendly and tight-knit, with the accessibility of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara coastline close by. If you're building a practice and a life, this is the place to do both.
COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT & BENEFITS
As director, you'll have the support structure to lead effectively and sustainably:
- Flexible scheduling, you manage your surgical calendar and on-call coverage to balance leadership responsibilities with clinical practice
- Partnership buy-in support, assistance with equity acquisition as you move toward ownership
- Comprehensive health benefits package, health, dental, and vision coverage
- Continuing education allowance and paid CE days, investment in your ongoing development and board maintenance
- Equipment acquisition budget, dedicated funding for surgical instruments, technology, and departmental improvements you prioritize
- Relocation support, comprehensive assistance with your transition to Agoura Hills
- Administrative support, dedicated resources to help you manage departmental operations, scheduling, and staffing decisions
THE INFRASTRUCTURE
Our 15,000 sq ft specialty hospital is purpose-built for advanced surgery. You will not work around limitations, you'll work with the tools you need:
- 5 state-of-the-art surgical suites with advanced monitoring and support
- In-house imaging: CT, digital radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, endoscopy, and arthroscopy
- MRI coming soon
- Capability for advanced interventional procedures including tracheal and urethral stenting
- 12 treatment stations with intensive monitoring for perioperative and post-operative care
WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH
A team of board-certified specialists who collaborate actively: two ECC Criticalists, a cardiologist (part-time, assisting with emergent consults), and a nutritionist. This isn't a collection of silos, it's a genuine collaborative practice where cross-specialty problem-solving is part of the culture. You'll have autonomy in surgery, with colleagues who elevate your work.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Board certification (ACVS) or completion of an ACVS registered surgery residency actively welcomed.
- Active California veterinary license in good standing (or ability to obtain prior to start date)
- Minimum 5+ years of surgical experience with demonstrated leadership or mentorship
- No history of malpractice or disciplinary actions
- Entrepreneurial mindset, you think about growth, efficiency, and building something meaningful
- Team orientation, you do your best work as part of something bigger than yourself, and you attract and develop strong people
- Vision for what's possible, you see opportunities to expand scope, improve efficiency, and build a surgical program you're proud of
